The German School Washington, D.C. (German: Deutsche Schule Washington, D.C.) is a co-educational private school located in Potomac, Maryland. The school serves about 620 student in grades pre-K to 12. The school was founded on September 11, 1961 with only 33 students. Its original purpose was to deliver a German education to the children of diplomats in the Washington D.C. area, though as it has grown over the years it has taken on a larger number of non-diplomat students. The school is partially supported by the German government.
The German School Washington, D.C. is a bilingual school using German and English. Subjects are taught primarily in German, and the curriculum follows that of Germany. In addition to the German Abitur, a secondary school graduation certificate, students can also get a Maryland High School Diploma. The school also offers a challenging college preparatory program, including AP courses.
